Popping Pills Will Never Be Enough

By Bethel Wagner - Practitioner at Sage Wellness Center

People in the United States are NOT well—about 40% of people in the U.S. are expected to be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lifetime, over ⅓ of U.S. adults are prediabetic, nearly half of adults have some sort of cardiovascular disease, and autoimmune diseases are on the rise.

Even worse, most people aren’t finding real answers to these problems. The mainstream American “health system” focuses on using pharmaceuticals and surgical procedures to suppress or manage symptoms, driving disease processes deeper into the body. Those unsatisfied with this approach often turn to naturopathic, functional, or integrative medicine, but even these fall short if practitioners just exchange pharmaceuticals for expensive lab work and fistfuls of supplements.

It’s no wonder people feel confused, overwhelmed, frustrated, or just plain hopeless. They struggle for years, going from doctor to doctor, taking more and more medications and supplements, yet never really feeling WELL.

Doctors, practitioners, and patients must all move beyond the current mechanistic, reductionist, compartmentalized thinking if they want different results. Fortunately, a paradigm shift is afoot, and better ways of assessing and caring for people are emerging that work to cultivate health and address the WHOLE person in integrated ways rather than merely suppressing symptoms or eternally trying to avoid “triggers” and rebalance nutrient levels.

We DON’T need:

  • More expensive lab tests (Not even if they are “Functional” or “Integrative”!)

  • Boatloads of supplements and/or medications

  • Empty lip service to “stress reduction”

We DO need:

  • An emphasis on the psycho-neuro-immuno pathway

  • Tools that address the nervous system and create safety in the body

  • Ways to address mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being in an integrated way

Running tests and popping pills, whether they be pharmaceuticals or “natural” supplements, will never be enough!

I believe most diseases can be reversed or healed in simple, elegant ways. Yet, healing isn’t always easy. It often requires deep, inner work to address the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects. It is non-linear, with ups and downs, and often feels messy. It requires slowing down, noticing, feeling, and processing in fully embodied ways.

Yet, the bottom line is that there IS hope, and true healing IS possible!
